Core Vaccines for Puppies and Dogs

Recommended Vaccine Schedule for Puppies and Dogs
Age Vaccine Type
8 – 9 weeks DHPP or Distemper/Parvovirus
12 – 13 weeks Same as above
16 – 17 weeks Same as above (optional)
4 months Rabies( give at least 3 to 4 weeks apart from DHPP or DP)
1 year DHPP or Distemper/Parvovirus
1 year Rabies (give at least 3 to 4 weeks apart from DHPP or DP)
The optional vaccine mentioned above may be recommended when there is an outbreak of one of the diseases covered by the vaccine or if a puppy received the first vaccine prior to 8 weeks of age. A couple of months ago we had an outbreak of parvovirus in our area and two of our patients were affected, one who had been vaccinated and one who had not.
After the one year vaccines the standard of practice is to give the core vaccines every 3 years thereafter.
After the one year rabies shot, rabies vaccine is required every 3 years by California law. If your animal is older or has health issues, we should discuss possible alternatives including measuring titers prior to administering any vaccine.
